M.Phil in Public Management
(2 years – 4 Semesters)
1. Overview
The MPhil in Public Management is a full time research oriented degree. The program is designed to equip individuals with latest research knowledge and training and prepare them for leadership positions in higher education institutions as well as organizations in the field of public and business administration. It builds the capacity of the graduates for pursuing PhD in their chosen fields.
The program offers individuals an opportunity to explore key issues and challenges faced by modern organizations in public, nonprofit and corporate domains. The program aims at creating leaders and researchers with analytical and critical thinking skills to find solutions relying on evidence based research for effective decision making.
It is an academically rigorous and professionally relevant program combining strategic skills, challenging students to apply the latest theory, scientific findings and new management methods to solve real-world problems faced by public, nonprofit and private organizations.
2. Rationale of the M.Phil Public Management Program
Fatima Jinnah Women University aims to provide quality education to the women of Pakistan. It aims to advance learning to the highest level attainable through research, teaching and dissemination of knowledge for the benefit of women in particular and society in general. In this regard, Department of Public Administration under the faculty of Law, Commerce, Management and Administrative Sciences is going to offer higher research degree M.Phil in Public Management.
At a time when governments, nonprofit and private organizations at all levels are expected to do more with less, good management is essential. The program will empower individuals to be critical thinkers having strategic vision much needed for tomorrow’s leaders to face complex challenges.
The MPhil in Public Management will facilitate the creation and interpretation of new knowledge by the researchers. The program comprises of both course work, followed by a research phase. Course work allows the students to widen, as well as deepen, their knowledge of research methods in management studies along with deeper understanding of the management issues and challenges faced by public, nonprofit and corporate sector organizations.
After completing the M.Phil in Public Management program, graduates will have the ability to characterize and solve management problems using analytical and critical thinking skills and advanced research tools. They will be able to derive policy implications from their research and communicate these to policy makers, practitioners and other academics in a manner, which is comprehensible, and to extend the frontiers of the discipline through their own innovative research.
3. Objectives of the Program
Keeping in view the need of the hour for leaders and researchers who are not only able to adapt to changing circumstances but are also able to solve complex problems facing modern organizations and society in general, the program has developed following objectives:
- To enhance the capacity of students to think and plan strategically and analyze environment that affects organizations and society;
- Provide an interdisciplinary approach to research. Water-tight compartments between different disciplines will be broken down through this program;
- Stimulate the cross-fertilization of ideas that will enrich the Management research;
- Deliver the government, industry and management institutes with individuals equipped with a high level of research capability and experience;
- Be responsible for a thorough understanding of the management theories and their applications in various fields, along with the ability to think systematically about, and apply quantitative methods to solve organizational problems;
4. Eligibility Criteria
- 16 years of formal education or 4 years education after FA/FSc/A-level or equivalent (at least 130 credit hours) with at least 2nd division (CGPA 2.5) in relevant field (Public Administration, Business Administration, Commerce, Economics, International Relations, Political Science and any other relevant field).
- GAT (General) Test conducted by NTS with a minimum 50% cumulative score.
- Interview
- A candidate for admission has no age limit as long as there is no mental handicap.
5. Duration of the Program
The program is full time research oriented delivered over a minimum period of two years with four semesters. The medium of instruction is English.
The degree will be awarded after:
- Completion of minimum of 30 credit hours (24 credit hours of course work and 6 credit hours of research thesis); and
- A minimum grade point average of 2.5 on 4.00 grade point scale. However, admission in PhD requires minimum of 3.0 grade point average on a scale of 4.0 grade point scale.
- Students must complete their degree within stipulated time period of 2 years with an extendable time of 1 year (maximum duration 3 years or 6 semesters) after which student will be deregistered and will have to seek new admissions.
- Maximum duration includes all reasons like semester freeze/leave, repeats, disciplinary, etc.
