Fatimaians' Literature Festival (FLF, 2023)

Literature Fiesta: Celebrating the Gravitas of Literature in Contemporary Times October 31-November 2, 2023 Department of English Fatima Jinnah Women University, Rawalpindi

The Department of English at Fatima Jinnah Women University (FJWU) is proud to present the inaugural edition of the Fatimaians’ Literature Festival (FLF) as part of the university’s 25th-year celebrations. The festival is set to take place from October 31-November 2, 2023, at the FJWU campus. Notably, FLF stands as the first literature festival of its kind in the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad, exclusively organized by women and hosted at a women’s university. The theme for the FLF 2023 is “Literature Fiesta: Celebrating the Gravitas of Literature in Contemporary Times”. This theme highlights the festival’s dedication to exploring the profound impact of literature on society, culture, and human experiences in today's dynamic world. The theme encompasses the fusion of literary traditions and modern perspectives, aiming to emphasize the enduring relevance of literature across diverse contexts. Objectives: The First Fatimaians’ Literature Festival seeks to achieve the following objectives:

  • To celebrate the significance of literature in contemporary times and its impact on society.
  • To provide a platform for emerging and established authors to connect with their readers.
  • To promote cultural exchange and diversity through literature and art.
  • To inspire creativity and critical thinking among attendees, particularly women.

Event Highlights: FLF 2023 will encompass a diverse range of activities and features:

  • Literary Panels and Talks: Renowned writers, scholars, and experts will lead panel discussions, lectures, and talks on subjects spanning classic and contemporary literature, poetry, fiction, non-fiction, and more.
  • Book Launches and Readings: The festival will host book launches and readings, offering emerging and established authors a platform to introduce their works and engage with their audience.
  • Artistic Performances: The festival will incorporate artistic performances such as dramatics, poetry recitals, and live music to infuse creativity into the literary celebrations.
  • Literary Bazaar: A vibrant literary bazaar will feature bookstalls, art installations, and literary merchandise, creating an atmosphere of cultural exchange.
  • Film Screenings: Screenings of literary adaptations and films related to literature will bridge the gap between literature and visual media.
  • Food Stalls: The food stall at a literature festival serves as a vibrant culinary hub, offering sustenance and a delightful sensory experience for attendees while fostering social interaction and complementing the literary ambiance.

The First Fatimaians’ Literature Festival 2023 stands as a unique celebration of literature's significance in contemporary times. With a diverse array of activities and a strong focus on gender empowerment and cultural exchange, the festival promises to enrich the literary landscape of the twin cities and extend its influence beyond academia. As the Department of English at FJWU takes the lead in organizing this event in collaboration with the Department of Urdu, Department of Anthropology and Department of Fine Arts, FLF 2023 will set a precedent for future literary endeavors, promoting dialogue, creativity, and the enduring power of words.
