COMMUNITY WORK FJ Volunteers – Lifeblood to Community Realizing the importance of the liaison with the communities and higher education institutions, Fatima Jinnah Women University (FJWU) gives priority to community services and plans programs in this regard. Being the first institution of higher education, for Pakistani Women, FJWU has successfully completed its decade of existence in 2008. In this short span of time, the university has grown exponentionaly with a reputation for its innovative learing programs and engaging its students for a minimum of 20 hours community work which is mandatory for the award of Masters/ Bachelors degree.
Fatimis are motivated to work voluntarily in any social organization, in order to deepen their civic responsibility, academic learning and for delivering sustainable enhancement of community well-being. Fatimis are actively involved in a wide range of voluntary projects, particularly in areas such as primary schools and children with disabilities, refugee centres, literacy of prisoners, day care centers, local hospitals, mentoring, aiding people with disabilities, development trusts, literacy and computer education, raising awareness about the social issues etc. These are just a few examples of the voluntary work. A large number of social organisations are offering different opportunities to FJ students in their voluntary work. Every voluntary activity or project of Fatimis benefits a specific individual or a large group of destitute. Whether it is serving at hospitals, tutoring children, or any other service activity. The benefits and gains for disadvantaged communities’ are enormous.
Voluntary work by the Fatimis acts as a catalyst which facilitates the community, in terms of gaining resources, services and also helps in the quality enhancement of life of disadvantaged sections of the Pakistani community. This training enables Fatimis to take up the challenges of the new era and maximize their skills and potential to their fullest capacity. Each Fatimi tries to reach out and help one person and the ripple effect ultimately results in benefits to the entire community. Through the teaching, learning, values, and commitment of faculty, staff, and students, FJWU prepares its students to contribute positively to local, national, and global communities. We at FJWU believe that higher education institutions exist to serve and strengthen the society of which they are part. Universities have the responsibility to foster in faculty, staff, and students, a sense of social responsibility and a commitment to the social good, which, we believe, is central to the success of a democratic and just society.
