Seminar on Avoiding Plagiarism and the use of Turnitin For Similarity Index Report

Adopting a systemic continuous improvement paradigm, the office of Quality Enhancement Cell at Fatima Jinnah Women University organized a Seminar on Avoiding Plagiarism and the use of Turnitin for Similarity Index Report for research scholars (M. Phil & Ph. D) and newly inducted faculty members.

Ms. Nosheen Naz, Coordinator of the Seminar in her welcome address highlighted the importance of Seminar and said that this is the responsibility of every person to say no to plagiarism. While emphasizing upon the major issues of research misconduct she focused upon the need to strategize that how should we inculcate the responsible behavior in research.

Seminar consists upon two sessions in first session Ms. Saadia Panni, resource person; Department of Education discussed various types of plagiarism and taught about the ways to avoid plagiarism. She guided the participants about writing techniques to evade plagiarism and trained on how to quote things while copying a txt. The exercise based session was helpful for participants to learn and practice things at the moment while improving their analytical skills.

In second session, Dr. Khushbakht Hina, Head, Anti-Plagiarism Unit, National University of Modern Languages joined as a resource person and deliberately talked upon plagiarism policies and code of conducts. She further highlighted the penalties bounded with plagiarism and emphasized the salient features of Turnitin software. While sharing bitter realities of todays research scholars in the country, she motivated the participants to start thinking and writing instead of copying. She advised the faculty participants to focus upon quality of writing and encourage their students who make effort to write at their own instead of copying high quality material.

The Seminar was a big opportunity to share problems and good practices about research integrity and avoiding plagiarism. The Seminar ended with vote of thanks by Ms. Nosheen Naz and the Chief Guest Prof. Dr. Azra Yasmin, Dean Faculty of Law, Commerce, Management & Administrative Sciences conferred university Souvenirs to the resource persons at the closing of Seminar.
