The literature courses are based on traditional as well as innovative and creative approaches. The students study most of the established topics like classical and romantic poetry, drama, as well as conventional novels and prose. At the same time they have courses related to the in-depth study of the genre of short story, feminist poetry, Shakespearean Tragedy and art of short story writing and publishing. The course on Practical Criticism and Critical Thinking incorporate the modern paradigms of Stylistics.
Literature written in English around the world is also an important constituent of the English Program. Courses in American, Canadian, Afro-Asian as well as Pakistani literature written in English are introduced to give the students an awareness of the current literary traditions in the world.
The language component includes courses related to Introduction to Linguistics, Applied Linguistics/TEFL/TESL, Phonetics and Phonology, Morphology, Syntax, Grammar, Discourse Analysis and Pragmatics. Such a wide range of language-related areas is not covered in any program in Pakistan. The endeavour is to introduce the students to most of the current pedagogical and linguistic paradigms. The knowledge and skills imparted in this area have a practical focus also to prepare the students for a resourceful output in the job market.
The students are motivated to investigate not only literary and language/linguistics issues for their theses in the final semester but comparative literature is also encouraged as an important area of research.
