Fatima Jinnah Women University with its vision of opening portals of excellence through Higher Education initiated the M. Phil leading to Ph. D program. It was started under the Continuing Education Program (CEP) to facilitate female scholars who wanted to pursue higher education after a gap and at their own pace.  Now it is also a regular M. Phil leading to Ph. D program.

The regular M. Phil leading to Ph. D program was launched in December 2009 in the disciplines of English, Environmental Sciences, and Economics. Two batches are currently enrolled in this program.

Procedure to Admission
Admission for M. Phil leading to Ph. D program is advertised once a year in the national newspapers. Admission criteria are in accordance with the Higher Education Commission and is clearly mentioned in the advertisement. Applications are invited and scrutinized and eligible candidates are invited for test/interview.

Admission Requirement:
M. Phil Program:

  • Completion of sixteen years of schooling .
  • Clearance of GAT General conducted by National Testing Service (minimum pass percentage is revised from time to time)
  • Recommendation of the FJWU selection committee based on the performance of the candidate in the interview and availability of seat.
  • NOC from the employer (if applicable)

Ph. D Program:

  • For admission into the Ph. D, successful completion of 30 credit hours with minimum CGPA 3.0 (out of 4.0) in M. Phil is required.
  • Clearance of GAT Subject or GRE Subject (minimum pass percentage is revised from time to time)

Scheme of Studies:

FJWU Board of Studies for respective disciplines recommends the Scheme of Studies for M. Phil leading to Ph. D program. The scheme is liable to be revised from time to time. The general layout is as follows:

  • Semester I and Semester II
  • The candidates are offered different courses in the first two semesters. A student is required to successfully complete 24 credit hours course work during this period.

  • Semester III and Semester IV:

    After successful completion of first two semesters, synopsis of research thesis is required to be approved by the FJWU Board of Advanced Studies and Research. Semester III & IV are specified for research and 06 credit hours of research is mandatory for the award of the M. Phil degree.

  • Ph. D Course Load and Research:

    PH. D requires 18 hours of course work followed by Comprehensive examination. Then the Ph. D synopsis is approved by FJWU Board of Advanced Studies and Research for Ph. D thesis.
    FJWU follows the criteria prescribed by Higher Education Commission. The program is regularly revised, updated and advertised accordingly.
    FJWU ensures the quality of M. Phil leading to Ph. D program through regular assessment, feedback and follow up. This program is regulated through an independent Ph. D Coordinator's office and other regulatory bodies of the university.
